The general manager of New York's Hotel Pennsylvania, the headquarters for Gay Games IV, announced last week that its employees are wary of serving the homosexual group.
The move comes amid increasing enthusiasm for the event and the $100 million boost the competition is projected to bring to New York.
Hotel Pennsylvania, which will fill 75% of its 1,700 rooms with gay visitors during the event scheduled for June 18-26, says its workers fear exposure to the HIV-virus that causes AIDS. Hotel Pennsylvania's General Manager and Vice President Kenneth Walles has asked the Hotel Association of New York City to outline a formal policy to deal with the matter.
There is no scientific evidence to suggest the virus can be transmitted through casual, non-sexual contact except between intravenous drug users sharing needles.
