DIONNE MACK-HARVIN is so dedicated to the Brooklyn Public Library that at one point during her 12-year tenure, she developed a restructuring plan that eliminated her own job.
Not to worry. The 60-branch organization quickly gave her an even better one. Such acts of bravery have contributed to Ms. Mack-Harvin's ascent from entry-level librarian at the Crown Heights branch to her appointment earlier this month as executive director of the entire system.
"She has had a very rapid career path," says Mary Graham, the Brooklyn library's interim deputy director for public service and a longtime colleague of Ms. Mack-Harvin. "She's open to new ideas, is willing to explore and learn, and has an energy that amazes all of us."
