Nearly two years after the Legal Aid Society was driven out of downtown by the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, the organization is close to finalizing a lease for a big office in the neighborhood, where it will rebuild its headquarters.
The 125-year-old organization, which provides legal services for poor New Yorkers, made an agreement with landlord Jack Resnick & Sons Inc. to rent 135,000 square feet at 199 Water St. The 20-year lease isn't signed yet, but the society's board of directors has approved the deal.
