BROOKLYN'S TALLEST tower, the venerable Williamsburgh Savings Bank building, began its new life as a luxury condominium last week. The first tenants moved in Monday, ushering in a new era furthe formerly seedy strip along the southern edge of Fort Greene.
The change has been a long time coming. The 10-block stretch of Flatbush Avenue from the Manhattan Bridge to Atlantic Avenue was part of an area rezoned in 2003 in an effort to remake downtown Brooklyn as a 24/7 neighborhood. Developers have since unveiled major projects, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music Cultural District and Atlantic Yards.
