An unusually mild winter is allowing local developers to get a jump on their construction calendars.
The warmer temperatures are allowing contractors to pick up the pace of construction and reduce the costs generally associated with work in bitter cold. Not only are construction crews more productive when wind chills are not a concern, but builders say the balmy weather makes it easier to pour concrete for building foundations.
"We haven't lost a day yet," says Tony Woo, vice president for construction at Battery Park City Authority, which broke ground recently for two residential buildings in lower Manhattan. "Normally in cold weather, you cannot pour superstructure concrete, but because of the mild weather they have been able to take advantage of that."
