In April, United Airlines, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2002, pulled the plug on its Indianapolis maintenance facility, putting 1,100 mechanics and 300 salaried employees out of work.
The closure was a painful chapter in a story that began in 1991 when then-Gov. Evan Bayh and then-Mayor William Hudnut enticed United to open its new maintenance hub at Indianapolis International Airport with the help of $300 million in public incentives.
