Melbourne’s best-known rock’n’roll pit, the Corner Hotel in Richmond, has launched legal action against wealthy property developer and smooth jazz hand Albert Dadon over the use of the word “corner”.
The two sides appeared in the Federal Court in Melbourne yesterday for the opening trumpet blasts in a legal battle that pits the Corner’s beer-drenched bandroom carpet against the “boutique style” accommodation offered by Mr Dadon’s venture, the Jazz Corner Hotel.
In documents filed with the court, the Corner Hotel’s licensee, Swancom, claims Mr Dadon and three of his companies have been infringing on its trademark over the word “corner” since at least November last year. This includes by using the phrases “jazz corner of Melbourne” and “jazz corner of the world”, as well as the moniker “Jazz Corner Cafe”, to describe businesses run out of a building on Williams Street in the city, where Mr Dadon has brought...
