Paula Schwartz of Annandale, a native of New York who wrote dozens of romance novels under the pen name Elizabeth Mansfield, died of ovarian cancer Dec. 21 at her home. She was 78.
Schwartz was a graduate of Hunter College in New York, which inducted her into its hall of fame in 2002. She received a master's degree in English from City College of New York.
She taught English and drama in New York schools before moving to Washington with her family in 1965, when her husband took a position with the Army Corps of Engineers.
She resumed her teaching career at Dunbarton College in Washington, but began writing full-time in the 1970s, after the college closed.
