Show Goes on at the Apollo Theatre
Angela Surauw had waited a lifetime for this moment. There she was, belting out an R & B tune on stage at the Apollo Theatre, hoping to be discovered just as James Brown was 50 Years ago.
Young Black talent searching for fame and fortune has been the Apollo's bread and butter for years. In its heyday, the theater showcased big names, from Billie Holiday to Bill Cosby.
But the state-owned theater in Harlem has hit on hard times, scrambling even in New York City's economic boom. Its facade is crumbling and its interior needs repair.
"This is almost like taking a couple of stars out of the American flag," Brown said in a telephone interview from Augusta, Georgia. "That's like tearing down the White House."
