THE WAVE OF INDUSTRY consolidations is being shadowed by an equally powerful wave of start-ups.
The explanation is simple: When two companies collide, executives leave and projects are axed.
Add to that the ample venture-capital funds available, especially for Internet start-ups, and you have an awful lot of small companies with innovative technology and high hopes.
For example, Utah has seen a veritable explosion of start-ups set off by the consolidation of WordPerfect Corp. and Novell Inc. and the subsequent downsizing at Novell. There also have been a slew of start-ups stemming from IBM Corp.'s purchase of Lotus Development Corp.
Cyberpath Inc., NetVision Inc., Helius Inc., Digital Harbor, KeyLabs, and scores of other companies focusing on networking and the Internet have been launched by ex-Novell and exWordPerfect...
