COSI Columbus is rolling out several programs to attract additional visitors and boost the money coming through its doors.
It's also exploring a partnership in which public television station WOSU would share space at its 333 W. Broad St. facility.
"We are clearly looking for new ways to generate revenue," said Tina Guegold, COSI vice president of marketing.
Though COSI's excess revenue over expenses rose to roughly $1 million in fiscal 2002, from $300,000 in fiscal 2001, the institution's total revenue was down 4 percent in 2002 to $19.1 million from $19.9 million reported in 2001.
Total revenue represents earned revenue, such as admissions and membership fees, as well as grants and donations. Though a firm figure for 2003, which ended June 30, was unavailable, COSI officials expect little change from fiscal 2002.
While revenue has been slipping, the science center has also faced higher utility costs at its new 316,000-square-foot home on West Broad Street. Utility costs have skyrocketed to roughly $800,000 a year from...
