WOSU Stations is gathering support to launch a three-year, $7 million capital-raising campaign to coincide with the nonprofit media group's conversion of its television stations to a digital signal.
Money raised in the capital drive would complement $4.3 million in federal and state grants that the station is using to pay for digital equipment needed for the January start-up.
Altogether, television station WOSU's digital conversion is expected to cost. about $9 million.
The capital campaign will mark the first time that WOSU Stations has sought public support for equipment, said Tom Rieland, general manager. He is confident the community will support the initiative, even though it could burden the organizations annual fund-raising initiatives for programming.
"This will double the (annual fund-raising) challenge for us for the next couple of years," Rieland said. "But we're building some momentum. we're building a strategic plan the entire station is involved in. We'll take that plan and move into the campaign phase to tell people where WOSU is going in the future."
