After an exacting twoyear refurbishment, the museum ship has now reopened to the public
After a 2-yr bow-to-stern renovation, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has re- opened to the public with a weekend filled with public ceremonies, entertainment and family activities. Located at the newly rebuilt Hudson River Park's Pier 86, the museum features new exhibits, interactive displays and programming events that will provide an unforgettable experience for New Yorkers and tourists alike.
The grand ; opening on 8 November was marked by a ceremonial ribbon cutting attended by George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company; Connie Fishman, President of Hudson River Park Trust; Intrepid officials and former crewmembers. In a symbolic "salute" to the Intrepid, the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD-5), along with more than 1000 sailors and marines, arrived in New York to be on hand for the festivities.
The entire project - which also included the complete rebuilding of Pier 86, the refurbishment of 16 historic aircraft on board, the redesigning and installation of a new Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, and an insideand-out paint job for the 65-yr-old aircraft carrier - cost approximately $115 million and took less than 2-yrs.
