In Lititz, the largely forgotten profession of watchmaking is looking for a few recruits to learn the trade. The Lititz Watch Technicum, which is still under construction off Route 501, will begin training students Sept. 4.
It is being funded through a grant sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A.
"There just aren't enough watchmakers," said Toby Collado, executive director for the American Watch Association in Washington, D.C.
The Lititz facility also will be a service center for Rolex Corp., which has its U.S. headquarters in New York City, said Charles Berthiaume, school director. The company would not say how much it cost to build the school, a 40,000-squarefoot building with a stone-barn facade.
The tuition of the first 12 students will be paid by a company grant. Two of three classrooms will be used for lessons and one for training Rolex technicians. The 11-month academic year includes five-day weeks and eight-hour workdays.
