Introduction
For a proper assessment of this historic document in sound, one must first understand how the entire collection, amounting to some sixty hours of performance, came into being.
In I928, while Richard Strauss's Agyptische Helena was in rehearsal at the Vienna Staatsoper, the help of a special technician was required for the realization of the complicated acoustical effects contained in the opera. On the recommendation of Clemens Krauss, the Viennese engineer Hermann May was entrusted with the task. May stayed on for many years as the sound technician at the Staatsoper.
