Abstract
A criação do Instituto de Matemática e Física da Universidade da Bahia (IMF) se deveu fundamentalmente à articulação de duas jovens mulheres que resolveram modernizar o ensino de matemática no Estado da Bahia: Arlete Cerqueira Lima e Martha Maria de Souza Dantas, que provocaram fraturas de gênero nas estruturas petrifi cadas do ensino matemático baiano criando um Instituto que, de modo inusitado, manteve de 1960 a meados de 2002 um corpo docente marcadamente feminino. Este artigo relata e analisa as trajetórias de algumas dessas mulheres pioneiras que consolidaram a obra de Arlete e Martha, destacando seus relatos quanto à educação familiar que receberam, fundamentada em estereótipos de gênero quanto à educação das mulheres, a “vocação” para a Matemática e os aspectos de suas carreiras acadêmicas construídas entre o ensino e a pesquisa.
