When Shashi Kapoor, the Indian star, left Bombay for the set of Jamil Dehlavi's Jinnah in Pakistan, he was attacked by his home city's politicians for going. When he arrived in Karachi, he was lambasted in the Pakistani press for coming. That's just a small part of the background to the epic English-language production which had its world premiere at the London festival on Sunday night.
There is also the controversial matter of two English actors cast as Jinnah - Richard Lintern as the young politician and Christopher Lee as the old statesman.
