A kid from New York City just made chess history.
On Sept. 28, 10-year-old Fabiano Caruana became the youngest U.S. player ever to defeat a chess grandmaster, the highest classification in chess. There are only a few hundred GMs worldwide, and reaching that plateau usually requires about 50,000 hours of intensive study.
Fabiano beat GM Alek Wojtkiewicz, the eighth-highest-ranked player in the United States, in a tournament at the famed Marshall Chess Club in New York.
Slaying Goliath is nothing new to Fabiano. In April, he defeated International Master Jay Bonin in a tournament game and set the record as the youngest U.S. player ever to beat an international master, a classification just below GM. Fabiano is also tops for his age group. He is the highest-rated player in the United States through age 12.
