BLOOMINGTON -- Busy. Hectic. Exciting.
That's how Central Catholic High School Principal Joy Allen describes her days as she prepares for the opening of the new school.
She talks eagerly about the new CCHS on Airport Road, referring to one room as a "dream come true," another "like a whole new world."
The first day of school is Aug. 25. Two half-days were scheduled for Thursday and Friday, but were canceled to allow more time for cleaning. Teachers and students are setting up and decorating classrooms and volunteers continue to move items from the old school at 712 N. Center St.
That building, which opened in 1928 as Trinity High School, will be demolished. While the history associated with the old building will undoubtedly be missed, improvements are immediately apparent at the new complex.
For one thing, there is a lot more space: The building is more than 100,000 square feet and is divided into "social" and academic wings, said Allen. The social wing includes a performing arts center on one end and a gymnasium on the other. A large commons area boasts skylights, and the school's redesigned logo is included in the tile floor. There also is a large cafeteria and faculty dining room.
