Hotel development on the Strip may have gotten a little too French for Mirage Resorts Inc. Chairman Steve Wynn.
Bally Grand Inc. has announced its new resort next to Bally's Las Vegas will be called the Paris Hotel. And the name of the joint venture hotel being built by Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus Enterprises Inc. likely will be changed from the Victorian to Monte Carlo.
"That's one name on the short list," said a Circus Circus executive. "A short list of one."
The working name for Wynn's proposed $1 billion resort at the Strip and Flamingo Road was Beau Rivage. But Wynn's intimates contend that name is being scratched.
Wynn spent a few days in June at Como Lake north of Milan in northern Italy.
"It's a favorite spot of his," said Mirage Resorts spokesman Alan Feldman.
And, according to friends of the gaming executive, Wynn was captivated by the Italian architecture.
Hence, Beau Rivage may become Lago di Como, or something to that effect.
"The project has been in a continual state of evolution," Feldman replied when asked if the upscale, $1 billion resort would undergo a major theme change. "It has all along been a theme of elegance."
Details of the project will be revealed "in about six to eight weeks," he said.
Feldman reacted quickly to the suggestion the hotel be called Palermo, Sicily's capital and chief seaport.
"That's funny," he said.
