Tuning In
If there's a coffee cup on the news set, it must be a morning show.
That's the only difference between morning, noon and evening newscasts on KVBC TV-3 and KLAS TV-8. All three stations run down the usual murder, rape and miscellaneous mayhem stories at 6 and 6:30 a.m. _ "If it bleeds, it leads," seems to be their motto _ with a smattering of real news, traffic reports, weather segments and a brief sports segment if you're lucky.
KTNV TV-13, which airs only a half-hour at 6:30, at least tries to be a little different, witness its lack of a coffee cup on the program we saw last week. As far as content goes, though, Channel 13's show, starring Mary Ruth Carleton and John Gregory, is pretty much the same as the others.
About those coffee cups: Channel 3's comes out on top. Its bright peacock and NBC logo scores an easy win over Channel 8's unimpressive mug with indistinct lettering.
Now, if only Channel 3's morning team were as lively. Sue Tripathi and Jim Snyder are stiff and lack that chemistry that local TV newscasts seem bent on developing between their male and female anchors.
