The door to the arts swings both ways in the Clark County School District.
Beyond the district's own curriculum-based and extracurricular activities, a variety of outside groups offer programs of their own.
The opportunities range from special Las Vegas Philharmonic concerts for fourth- and fifth-graders at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to theater tours sponsored by the Kennedy Center of Washington, D.C.
The long-running Class Act program books more than 600 performances at local schools, featuring such professionals as clown Skeeter Reece, steel drum soloist Harris Todman, the Mexico Vivo Dance Company and musical groups ranging from the Sierra Winds to the Bill Trujillo Jazz Quintet.
Local companies and institutions sponsor art contests. The Nevada Arts Council offers matching grants to bring artists-in-residence to district schools. Local parks and recreation departments send visiting artists to schools to share their knowledge.
And Future Dance - a free program sponsored by Nevada Ballet Theatre and underwritten by the Lied Foundation - helps more than 500 students at five at-risk elementary schools explore the magic of moves from ballet to hip-hop. In its seventh year, Future Dance welcomes all students to the program, which culminates in a spring performance.
