Taliban house-to-house searches
The Afghan Taliban have been carrying out house-to-house searches in Kabul. It was first restricted to the northern half of the city which is mainly Tajik-inhabited areas, but they later extended it to some other areas after social media outcry. The move is believed to be in coordination with similar searches in the provinces north of Kabul and appears to be aimed at looking for former security personnel and the supporters of the NRF resistance group (The National Resistance Front).
The European Union delegation in Kabul has called for an end to the operations.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid has termed the search operations as "constructive," saying that many weapons, ammunition, Islamic State (IS) affiliates and other criminals have been seized during the operation.
"Nine kidnappers, six IS affiliates and 53 robbers have been arrested," he claimed. Mujahid added that two women were also present among their security personnel during the search operations.
"Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Afghanistan Andreas von Brandt, in a tweet, has called on the Taliban to stop these house-to-house searches in Kabul and the adjacent provinces. He says even though the world watches Russia's invasion of Ukraine, they also watch what the Taliban are doing, Private Channel One TV (1TV) reported on 28 February.
"Taliban house-to-house searches continue in Kabul, and mainly the group's intelligence forces are trying to enter the houses," the private Etilaat-e Roz daily reported on 28 February.
