(STF) - Asian superstar Coco Lee will bring her R&B-flavoured and Western- tinged sounds to Kuala Lumpur next week, writes Shuib Taib.
WHEN we speak of Asian superstars, Bruce Lee, Vanessa-Mae, John Woo, Ang Lee, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-Fat, Anggun and Jet Li come to mind.
What about Hong Kong-born singer Coco Lee? She is a star, all right, but we are reluctant to put her on the list because this woman - who made it big in the United States with her debut Just No Other Way - was raised in San Francisco and now lives in Los Angeles.
"People cannot imagine what I sound like, but when I sing they are surprised," Lee once said.
The youngest of three girls, all of whom can sing, Lee's involvement in music started by chance.
Her mother, a doctor and a musician, encouraged her children to pursue more traditional careers. Nevertheless, Lee's older sisters entered singing contests and were successful.
Lee spent much of her spare time singing songs by Whitney Houston, Madonna, Debbie Gibson and George Michael. Her move to the next level of performing came naturally.
