Two men with vastly different backgrounds who know the intrigue and dangers of Mount Everest like few others will share their experiences during a program Saturday at the Fine Arts Center.
Eric Simonson, a world-renowned climber who led the 1999 Everest expedition that found the body of famed British climber George Mallory, and Jangbu Sherpa, who helped haul the heavy IMAX cameras up Everest for filmmaker David Breashears' 1996 expedition, will talk about their experiences on the world's tallest mountain.
Before he embarked on the Mallory expedition, Simonson's climbing resume already seemed complete: an epic 41-day traverse of Alaska's Denali Peak (also known as Mount McKinley); 16 ascents of Denali; 260 ascents of Washington's Mount Rainier; expeditions in India, Nepal, Tibet, Antarctica, Russia, Tajikstan, South America and Africa; 20 trips to the Himalayas; and seven trips to Everest, including a summit in 1991.
