BOSTON (AP) - The House chairman of the Post Audit and Oversight Committee resigned today rather than support an upcoming tax package worth up to $800 million.
Rep. Robert Cerasoli, D-Quincy, was one of several committee chairman who received a telephone call from Speaker George Keverian over the weekend in regard to the new taxes. Cerasoli said he was told to support the package or quit.
Cerasoli said there was no way he could support new taxes.
"I simply cannot vote for taxes," he wrote. "Taxes are not right without a greater effort on our part to solve this problem and I owe it to the people I represent to stand on the side of principle over our own personal friendship."
'GREAT RESPECT'
"I have a great respect for you and your ability to run this legislature. Therefore, I feel it incumbent upon me to submit to you my resignation as chairman," Cerasoli wrote in a letter delivered to the speaker today.
