Despite criticism leveled at a Vatican-sponsored conference on AIDS, a local priest believes the conference was worthwhile as a "sign to those of us in the parish" to take a more active role in fighting the epidemic.
The message of the conference, held recently in Rome, said Rev. James Houston, was that "AIDS is not something you can put off until next month ... it needs to be dealt with now."
Father Houston was national director of a renewal program for the clergy and is now temporarily assigned to Our Lady of the Angels Church while awaiting reassignment as a pastor.
