Two WAAF-FM disc jockeys who falsely reported that Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino had been killed in a car accident have been the focus of complaints filed against the Boston-Worcester radio station.
DJs Opie and Anthony, program director Dave Douglas, and general manager Bruce Mittman have been suspended indefinitely over the April Fool's Day broadcast while the station's owner investigates, said Michael B. Milsom, president of American Radio Systems.
According to a report in yesterday's Boston Herald, Menino filed a complaint with the FCC after learning of the episode, which unfolded while he was flying from Florida to Boston. The reports stunned family members and friends of Menino, prompting them to call City Hall, unaware the reports were a prank. The DJs persisted with the reports even after Menino's staff pleaded with them to stop, according to published reports.
Opie and Anthony have at least one previous suspension, according to Milsom, and were the subject of complaints filed with the Federal Communications Commission to protest indecent or obscene programming.
The FCC recently dismissed two complaints about WAAF and one about WBCN-FM.
