THE Macau International Airport was officially opened yesterday, heralding a new era for this Portuguese administered territory.
Visitors no longer need to arrive through Hong Kong which is about 60km away and exports do not need to be shipped through the neighbouring territory. The grand opening ceremony officiated by Portuguese President Mario Soares was attended by leading business and political figures from China and the region.
The ceremony kicked off a full day of merrymaking, replete with Portuguese and Chinese folk dancing, dragon dances, street carnivals and the setting off of what's been called the world's longest string of firecrackers.
