MARIAH CAREY - Butterfly MARIAH Carey's the biggest selling artiste of the 90s, having sold more than 80 million albums since she exploded on the scene in 1990.
Her last album Daydream, went nine times platinum in the States alone, and generated three No 1 singles. She is the first female artiste in history to have each of her studio albums sell in excess of eight million copies.
With the enormous burden of expectations on her, plus the break-up of her marriage to Tony Mottola, the president of Sony Records, it is no wonder it took about two years for her new album to arrive!
Well, it has made a great start with Honey, the first single from Butterfly, which debuted at No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Honey is her third single to open in the top spot and her 12th No 1 overall, giving her the most chart-toppers of any solo female artiste in the rock era. Only six singles have debuted at No 1 in the history of the Billboard Charts, and Mariah owns half of them!
This album features Mariah as a songwriter, having co-written 11 new compositions. Honey features Sean Puff Daddy Combs, as co-writer.
It's a sleek urban hip hop tune, with lots of stylish vocalisations by Mariah and rich vocal harmonies. Nice feel, if a little weak lyrically.
The title track is a R&B ballad, featuring Mariah singing in whispery tones, before exploding with her patented full-throated vocals. It's a graceful song of setting someone she loves...
