AIR Asia recently named its 17th plane after Lat as a tribute to the Malaysian icon we all know and love. SUZANNA PILLAY writes.
"FIRST of all, I have to remind my family and relatives in Ipoh that this plane is not mine.
"I don't want them coming up to me saying, `we would like to travel and can you arrange for us to be sent to Jeddah or for the umrah," says Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, tongue-in-cheek.
Lat, as he is more affectionately known, just had the distinct honour of having Air Asia's 17th plane, a Boeing 737-300, named after him at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport last week. Paying tribute to this Malaysian icon, the plane also sports some of his most recognisable creations on its body and tail.
On the right side of the aircraft, amidst launching paper aeroplanes and catching the wind with pinwheels, kampung children play with a giant pinang frond, with one pulling while three others ride astride, depicting an old kampung game.
