ARENAWilander Wins U.S. ProFor Fourth Title of Year Mats Wilander beat fellow Swede Kent Carlsson in straight sets yesterday to win the U.S. Pro Tennis Championships at Brookline, Mass., for the second time in three years. Wilander, ranked second in the world, recovered from an early 4-2 deficit to win, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. It is the fourth singles title of the year for the top-seeded Wilander, whose biggest 1987 victory has been in the Italian Open. Of his 25 career championships, 17 have been on clay, including the 1985 U.S. Pro. Wilander, who won 11 of the last 14 games, received $39,440 and Carlsson $19,720 of the $232,000 purse at the Longwood Cricket Club. Goldie Captures First Pro Tourney
Dan Goldie, the 1986 NCAA singles champion for Stanford, won his first professional title, defeating Sammy Giammalva, 67, 6-4, 6-4, in the Volvo Tennis Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, R.I. Goldie, ranked No. 113 in the world, earned $20,000. Giammalva, ranked No. 96, received $10,000. Goldie, 23, of McLean, Va., has played the Grand Prix circuit for a year.
