Lucy Monroe, called the star-spangled soprano because she sangthe national anthem for presidents, veterans groups, at every NewYork Yankees opening day game between 1945 and 1960, and every time the team was in the World Series during that period, died Tuesday of cancer at her Manhattan home.
Miss Monroe, who was 80, once estimated that since she had first performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" in 1937, she had sung it 5,000 times.
