The federal government is blocking the Transit Authority's plans to begin rebuilding New York's decrepit J and M subway lines next year because the trains travel over the crumbling Williamsburg Bridge.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has asked the government for $160 million for new track, elevated structures, signals and station modernization for the J and the M, which serve 54,000 riders daily in Brooklyn and Queens.
The 75-year-old BMT lines have the oldest rolling stock on the subway system. Breakdowns are frequent. Cars are not air conditioned and are scarred by accumulated graffiti.
