Jackson guard Dave Edwards built his basketball reputation as much on his deft ballhandling and flashy drives as on his prodigious scoring feats. Yesterday, though, Edwards' high-school career came to an end largely because he made three ill-fated moves that helped Cardozo upset Jackson, 75-70, in a first-round PSAL playoff game at Bowne.
The crucial sequence began with Jackson leading 70-69 and with 25 seconds remaining. Edwards, who earlier had set the state single-season record with his 925th point, tried to dribble past two Cardozo defenders near midcourt. Mark Pearson stole the ball and Hal Cohen drove in for a layup to make it 71-70 for Cardozo.
With 16 seconds left, Edwards got the ball underneath the basket and tried a quick spin move. He was called for traveling. After Cardozo missed a layup at the other end with 10 seconds left, Edwards rebounded and began dribbling upcourt. Just past the halfcourt line, referee Pat Marino called him for a double dribble.
"I can't change the call," Edwards said later, "but me, personally, I think it was bogus . . . I know we would have won. I would have scored."
