`HIT PARADER'S HEAVY METAL MELTDOWN' Saturday night at 12:30 a.m., WOR / 9 Concerned about the fight between Sammy Hagar and the other members of Van Halen? Want to tour Kiss king Gene Simmons' mansion or bowl with Exodus?
If you answer affirmatively, this half-hour will put you in headbangers' heaven. Conveniently scheduled to follow "Freddy's Nightmares," this program is structured like most glitzy magazine shows, except its featured stars have shoulder-length hair, wear studded black leather outfits and play industrial-strength power chords. It reports the latest heavy-metal gossip, and there's even an advice segment.
On one recent show, John Sykes of the band Blue Murder, explained how to become a heavy-metal star: "Don't let the women pull you down . . . one chick wanted to get married, keep the nine-to-five life, and I went for it. But then I thought `No, this ain't the life for me.' "
These sentiments aside, this show offers a highly amusing celebration of heavy metal, which is a nice change from the negative publicity the genre usually receives on TV talk shows. After all, boys, too, just want to have fun. Andrew Edelstein
