The Eagle Hill School plans to vacate the Coindre Hall mansion overlooking Huntington Harbor next month, breaking its long-term lease with Suffolk County, a Suffolk legislator said yesterday.
Legis. James Gaughran (D-Huntington) said he learned only last week from Suffolk Real Estate Commissioner Joan Scherb that the school, which teaches children with learning disabilities, had decided to shut its doors at Coindre Hall.
The school's headmaster, David Harris, said he informed the county last week of the decision to close. He said the school was $45,000 behind in its rent, and has offered to return the lease and have the county keep the $20,000 security deposit.
Harris said the school was trying to find alternative placement for its 60 students. "It's a sad thing - very difficult for the children and their families," he said. Scherb could not be reached for comment yesterday.
