Scores of volunteers will descend on a tract of land just north of the Bartow-Pell Mansion Saturday to plant at least 900 trees to commemorate Earth Day.
The volunteer will gather in the parking lot of the Pelham Bay Park site at 9 a.m. to work with the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality and the city Parks Department, sponsors of the event.
Jorge Santiago, a board member of the nonprofit BCEQ, estimated that more than 100 volunteers will come from Fordham University and Bronx Boy Scout troops as well as his organization. He said his group has worked with the Boy Scouts on other environmental projects, including clean-up efforts at Orchard Beach.
"We've been doing some type of project for the past few years to commemorate Earth Day," Santiago said. He said this is his group's first venture with the Parks Department. "This year we were informed that the department had a lot of trees to plant, and we said we could find the volunteers to get the job done."
