Q. Which have been the best and most rewarding moments for you so far as the city's First Lady? A. The most rewarding moment was David's inauguration, to have on the platform his father and my father, for them to have lived to see him accomplish this.
And my little grandson also witnessed it. Someday he will appreciate having been part of this experience.
Q. You grew up in a prominent and active political home. Did either of your parents suggest that you could have your own public career? A. My father was very involved with politics. My mother was not that involved. My father served in the Assembly, he was a district leader. He always thought of David being the person to become the elected official. In his day he didn't think of a female being in that role as much as a male.
Q. Are you bored with politics, or do you love it? A. It just becomes part of your lifestyle.
Q. You sponsored a Reading as Recreation program and have been vocal in asking publishers to donate to libraries in these times of scant resources. Will you continue to support the program? A. The reading program started when we had first graders come to Gracie Mansion. I read them a story, and then we would chat. I do this with the assistance of the Parks Department. The children receive a tour of Gracie Mansion, and then everyone receives a book to take home. The purpose is to encourage children to read for fun.
We are fortunate that publishers have donated books. For some children, it's their first book. One...
