NO ONE EXPECTED them to win. Not in Hempstead. Not in the tournament that Hempstead had dominated, victorious eight times since its inception 10 years ago. Not since it had fallen to Hempstead during the regular season of the McDonald's Twilight Summer Basketball League.
So, having beaten Hempstead, 84-74, in the championship game two weeks ago, Westbury had reason to celebrate. And, its players - all of whom play for the varsity team at Westbury High School - knew just who to call first to share the good news. Martin Reid, the varsity basketball coach at Westbury.
