The next time you have a free Saturday afternoon with nothing to do, or your out-of-town relatives visit and need to be entertained, check out some of these little-known, wacky, hotspots of Queens and Brooklyn.
Right on the Queens / Nassau border is a one-of-a-kind museum where one can see vintage guitars, learn a bit about their history, and be entertained by the great banjo-playing of owner / founder Chris Ambadjes. Admission is free. The American Guitar Museum, 1810 New Hyde Park Rd. off Hillside Avenue, (516) 354-9400.
For those nostalgic for the smell of vinyl and the scratches, hisses and pops made by old record albums, Breakdown Records in Bayside offers tons of rare and used records in all styles of music at great prices - so if you're still looking for that one hard-to-find Neil Young album. 47-31 Bell Blvd., 279-0040.
Right next door is Jimmy's Comedy Alley where you can see aspiring young talents as well as seasoned pros. 47-29 Bell Blvd., 631-5055.
After dinner, take your date for a romantic walk around Oakland Lake. While you're there, you can feed the ducks, the resident swans, or even fish. 46th Avenue and Cloverdale Boulevard, right off Northern.
For those who love to shop, and you know who you are, there are locallygrown, fresh-picked fruits and vegetables at John Bowne High School. Starting July 5, students from this unique summer agricultural program sell what they have sown in the farm behind the school. Main Street and Reeves Avenue.
For a great iced cappucino (although my friend Mike Hancock likes the brick-oven pizza), visit Cafe New York on Francis Lewis Boulevard. Francis Lewis Boulevard and 29th Avenue, 461-5444.
Follow that with a race of your own to Crocheron Park. Park by the lake and walk up the hill to the lookout...
