Walt Whitman Mall is being remade along the lines of Roosevelt Field into a glitzy center that caters to upscale shoppers with pricey boutiques and - with yesterday's official announcement of Lord & Taylor's arrival - four department stores.
Expansion of the regional mall in South Huntington, which is among the area's smallest, finally is under way after eight years of developers' proposals, community protests and lawsuits.
Lord & Taylor spokeswoman Sunny Lebowitz confirmed that the Fifth Avenue fashion retailer plans to construct a two-story, 120,000-square-foot store on the mall's north end. About 200 people will work there.
Bloomingdale's will be the first major new arrival. It is renovating a former Macy's store at the south end of the mall, adding a gray facade and glass entrance. It is to open in August and will be the first Bloomingdale's in Suffolk County.
