After years of mulling over ways to bring air-conditioning to the city's subway system, transit officials have decided to install cooling units at two of New York's busiest and hottest stations.
If all goes as planned, the prototype cooling systems will be in place in May of 2000 at the Lexington Avenue line's 42nd Street station and at Union Square. The goal is to reduce temperatures at the stations by 10 to 20 degrees.
