The letter that came to Carlos Chuva recently left him no choice: move or sell, but in either case be gone from his storefront in the belly of a decrepit Jackson Heights subway and bus terminal within a few months.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority wants his space and that of 25 or so other merchants to demolish the two-story structure that houses them. In its place at 74th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, the MTA plans a $90 million rebuilding of two subway stations and a bus depot that serve thousands of commuters transferring each day among the terminal's four subway and six bus lines.
Construction, which is expected to cause major disruptions in service, is scheduled to begin in two years and last another three. But the MTA has already begun the process of buying out the leases of the businesses, beginning with a public hearing Monday night...
