WHY ISN'T Chayanne a bigger star? He's handsome, possesses a strong, supple singing voice and dances like a dream. (All of these talents were ably displayed in the 1998 film "Dance With Me.") In concert he's a charismatic whirling dervish who, attempting to please his adoring audiences, performs to the edge of exhaustion. (A Chayanne show should be subtitled: "He works hard for the money ...and applause.")
So why isn't he a bigger star? The answer is simple. With the exception of his last album, 1998's "Atado a Tu Amor," Chayanne's recorded output had the stale taste of bubblegum pop attached to it. (It's as though he never progressed past his teen idol days with Los Chicos.)
That's why "Atado a Tu Amor" (Sony Discos) was such a pleasant surprise. Finally, Chayanne was singing adult songs. These were compositions of love lost and gained. These were tunes of "experience."
It's also why his latest effort, "Simplemente" (Sony Discos), is a mild disappointment....
