Voters in the South Huntington school district have narrowly approved an $11.9-million bond to pay for the construction of a new library.
South Huntington Union Free School District residents passed the referendum Tuesday night by 39 votes, with 1,532 voting in favor and 1,493 voting against. The bond will cost homeowners an average of $84 annually in taxes over the next 20 years.
"We knew it was going to be close, but not this close," said Ken Weil, director of the South Huntington Public Library Board. "This is an important step in creating a library that can support its community."
