Maria Bentel, a well-known teacher and architect on Long Island for more than 40 years, died on Nov. 8 at her home in Locust Valley from complications of bone marrow cancer. She was 72.
The Jackson Heights, Queens, native received her bachelor's degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. While attending the school, she met another architectural student, Frederick Bentel, whom she later married.
Both Fulbright-Hayes Scholars, the two studied in Europe under the tutelage of well-known architects for the next several years.
In 1957, the couple established the architectural firm of Bentel & Bentel Architects/Planners.
