Hofstra University plans to embark on a $29 million renovation and expansion project during the next two years, affecting several academic departments and cultural facilities. The plans also alter how the university would use the former federal courthouse building adjacent to the Hempstead campus.
Approved by the board of trustees in December, the expansion project involves renovation of two theaters on campus and other campus buildings, and construction of a four-story building. The money has come from budget surpluses and fund-raising.
University president Stuart Rabinowitz said the project will create additional performance and rehearsal space for the music, drama and dance departments. It also would free up space for the Fine Arts and English departments and the School of Education and Allied Human Services, allowing them to consolidate offices and classes in larger quarters.
