Kmart may be pulling the plug on underperforming stores in the area, but local real estate brokers say they do not think the locations will stay vacant for long.
Kmart said yesterday it will shut stores in Westbury, Syosset, Stony Brook, Fresh Meadows and Brooklyn. Top contenders for the space will be Target, Kohl's and Wal-Mart, brokers said yesterday.
All three chains have been aggressively expanding on Long Island, and many of the locations that Kmart abandoned are prime retail spots, including the stores in Fresh Meadows and Westbury.
