Kohl's Department Stores purchased the lease to the closed Kmart store in Fresh Meadows for what likely will be the retailer's first New York City location, court papers filed in connection with Kmart's bankruptcy show.
Also, the lease to the closed Kmart store in Syosset was sold to Home Depot at an April 9 auction at the Chicago offices of Kmart's lawyers. However, there were no successful bidders for other area stores in Brooklyn, Westbury and Stony Brook.
The lease sales require bankruptcy court approval.
The lease to the now-closed Kmart store in Fresh Meadows was sold to the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based retailer as part of a $16 million package of leases for five stores in various parts of the country.
